Any suggestions from all you experienced cachers on getting rid of a stubborn case of poison oak? Besides staying out of it in the first place, I mean! We are usually very careful, but one of the team (me) managed to encounter some somewhere. Hmmm... caching, maybe? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When I think I've been anywhere near poison oak I always scrub down with Tecnu when I get home. If you miss the opportunity to diminish the first exposure, my dermatologist recommends getting the shot or the pills if it is acute. And I have had some severe cases of poison oak! With Tecnu I've been able to limit any outbreaks to small areas, and therefore I've opted to forego taking Prednisone with its nasty side effects.

Bleach probably works but I've always felt that it's all about the application----A wire brush.

Well, to bring this way, way back to the original topic as I sit here grumpily scratching, thank you for those ideas. I'm doing the bleach thing and it does seem to help, although whether it will effect a cure before my left arm sloughs off completely is debatable. We're going to keep those other two products on hand for the future. thx (this is my first smiley)

Poison oak goes dormant? The worst case I ever had was in the winter when one can't recognize it without its leaves.

p.s. The current price of tea in China is ¥6750.4

Hmmmm, I am under the impression that usherall ? sp ? the active nasty in poison oak is less pronounced in the fall and winter months.

The information that HGS has just shared has me rather concerned that I may be operating under a false sense of security ... any other poison oak facts??

I am from the east part of the country and we had to worry about poison ivy. I was never bothered by poison ivy ... so while in the woods one day I never gave it a second thought when my buddy wanted some leaves to wipe with ... Ooooooops I gave him poison ivy to wipe with ... yepper, he missed some school for a while, never quite forgave me. TRUE STORY

POISON OAK ETIQUETTE
Because Poison Oak is one of the worst afflictions mankind must suffer, there must be rules of etiquette for dealing with it.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD POISON OAK:
You may not joke about it.
You cannot say, "Don't you know what it looks like?"
You may not offer your advice on how to treat it.
You must show nothing but sympathy, and if it is feigned it must seem genuine.
Absolutely no smirking!
You are not allowed to intimate that the person who has Poison Oak deserved it, or is afflicted due to incompetence on their part.

IF YOU ARE IMMUNE:
All the above rules apply to you.
You may never boast of your immunity, and especially never touch poison oak to demonstrate your immunity. I heard of a man who ate a poison oak leaf to show off. This is a justifiable motive for homicide.
If you cannot follow the above guidelines, please kill yourself now.

IF YOU HAVE HAD POISON OAK:
You must show sympathy, and tell anecdotes about how bad you had it.
You may joke and laugh, as long as you make it known that you feel very deep sorrow at the affliction.
Feel free to imply that all immune people should be exterminated off the face of the earth.

Ouch,

But really, does it have a dormant phase ... are some folks more sensitive ...I really desire some education.

Anyone care to trust me handing them leaves while out and about??

" Leaves are absent in winter; however, you can still develop the symptomatic rash if contact is made during the winter months." (Contact includes stems and roots.)

agree

Funny post though. I used to get it something terrible as a kid ...not heading where it was, but as an adult I am VERY aware and point it out to my kids whenever I see it near by...I dread the day I get it just form doing their laundry!

Working a cache with Asaxist on Trinidad Head ? Fun With Google Earth ? A most friendly dog came by and interacted in a positive way with Asaxist, within hours Sue had one of the most violent reactions I have seen. Doggy must have been rolling in the stuff.

"Twas shortly after that when Mrs. Patsu clued me in on the bleach treatment

Here is a list of folk remedies for poison oak and poison ivy. I've used a recipe for laundry soap that includes Fels-Naptha to wash any exposed clothing. I've read that urushiol can stay on clothes for a long time.

Well, I can't pronounce the active nasty, urushiol oil, any time of year. However, I'm better at spotting it when it has its leaves. The worst case I ever had was on the east coast working for the YCC and had to clear a trail of all these pesky vines one November. This case is not as bad as that, and I'm grateful that it's me and not one of the boys. But I'm still cranky. Unfortunately I don't know where I picked this up - could be from the dog. In the future I'll wash both her and our clothes after an outing, but I'm not sure she'll fit in the washing machine.
Thanks for that great link, HGS!

Okay, it's official. You can get poison oak at this time of year. As a service to my fellow cachers I sacrificed myself for this experiment. mad

One small blow for P.O. sufferers everywhere. Enbay1, your advice re Zanfel was a LIFESAVER. This is a miracle product in spite of the cost. We'll be keeping Tecnu and Zanfel on our shelves from now on! (I'd make a link, but I don't know how). laugh

Ahhh. a good thread here on poison oak and very appropiate. I use Ivy-Dry soap if I think Ive been anywhere around it.Ive also used Technu, bleach,Simple Green and a few other remedies that Ive forgotten. Theres supposed to be a local plant of some sort that works but I forgot its name.
Most trails in South Humboldt I wont walk unless Ivm wearing rubber boots.I will make darn sure to never borrow any leaves from friend Humboldt Flier while out and about.
