Super Bowl XLIV will be played on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Prior to January 2010 the stadium is known as Land Shark Stadium.)

Super Bowl Sunday has become a de facto American national holiday. The half-time shows and commercials are as entertaining as the game itself, and Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest U.S. food consumption day (after Thanksgiving Day).

Traditionally, millions of people participate in a Super Bowl pool at their office or favorite bar. This is your chance to enter the LCCF Super Bowl Pool and win valuable LCCF geocoins. Most football pools are illegal because they involve gambling—but not the LCCF Super Bowl Pool! It’s not gambling because it’s FREE. Here’s how to play:
  1. See the pool grid by clicking here.
  2. Each LCCF member may choose two four squares.
  3. Post your choices on this thread (e.g. hidegoseek picked C-2 and H-7). Choices are first come, first served. (Only registered LCCF members are eligible to play.) The grid will be regularly updated.
  4. The actual numbers will be randomly drawn when the grid is filled, or on February 5 if empty squares remain. Once the numbers are drawn the pool is closed to new entries. To avoid disappointment, post your selections by February 4.
  5. One LCCF geocoin will be awarded at the end of each quarter of play. If the score is tied at the end of the fourth quarter, that score will win a geocoin and another coin will be awarded for the final score. (See trivia below.)
  6. If a “blank” square wins a quarter, that geocoin will be added to the next quarter’s prize. (If the final score is on a blank square…well, too bad.)
Trivia regarding Super Bowl scoring:
  • There has never been a Super Bowl overtime, although three games have been tied in the final minute.
  • There has never been a Super Bowl shutout; every Super Bowl participant to date has scored at least 3 points.
  • No Super Bowl has ever been scoreless at halftime.
Winners can make arrangements to receive their coins by contacting dbirdman.

Good luck, everyone! Have fun and enjoy the game.

There's not as many players as I anticipated (fathom that) and lots of empty squares on the pool. So, everyone with two squares can add TWO more! And new players can choose FOUR squares. There is still room for ten more members.

Those F's were taken, so I put you on the E's. In retrospect, I should have matched the row and column headings with the Excel designations. My bad. sorry

Due to some confusion as to what reference numbers to use, I just changed the row and column headings to match the Excel coords. (Kinda like the difference between True North and Magnetic North.) laugh

None of the names on the squares have been moved.

If you would like to move your squares around just post the request here. Good luck!

Breakfasts, M&G's, or any other non-finding task is in diametric opposition to " Picking up the numbers ". Soooooooo to the premise of picking up the numbers Cache hard, and cache well into the night. I am reminded of a 21 hour caching run that Asaxist, Bubblesintheam, and I took about 3 years ago. Actually, that's 21 numbers.

If I understand correctly how this works, we actually need 2 permutations of the digits 0 to 9. One is assigned to the rows and one to the columns. For example, the rows might be numbered 5,3,8,6,0,2,9,4,1,7 from left to right and the columns 2,8,9,0,5,4,7,1,6,3 from top to bottom. If the final score is, say, 22 to 18, then you use the last digits, 2 and 8, to pick a row and column in the grid. Whoever owns the square where the row and column meet wins.

A score of 22 to 18 would be unusual, but it probably has the same probability as 18 to 22. I once bought in on two squares with a California State Assemblyman and we ended up with 5-5 and 5-2. It was a weird game with a touchback, and we won $150. I don't remember the game (probably a bowl game), but I remember being happy that a politician paid me off. shocked

Now that the binary is over, I'll repost the change in pool coords:

redflg redflg redflg redflg redflg

Due to some confusion as to what reference numbers to use, I just changed the row and column headings to match the Excel coords. (Kinda like the difference between True North and Magnetic North.) laugh

None of the names on the squares have been moved.

If you would like to move your squares around just post the request here. Remember, everyone gets four squares now. Good luck!

Yeah, be careful what you wish for!

Anyway, for those who don't speak binary, my post said:

Good advice. You wouldn't want to spill Ovaltine on your pizza.

Of course, that doesn't make much sense out of context, but I
wouldn't feel comfortable translating anyone else's posts.

Only two more games before the Super Bowl:
  • Jets vs. Colts
  • Vikings vs. Saints

You're right. There's a list of scores from 13852 pro football games at All Game Scores in Pro Football History. It shows that a score of 22-18 has never occurred. Of the 27704 scores in those games, 22 has only occurred 237 times and 18 has only occurred 90 times.

Neither 5-5 nor 5-2 has occurred in pro football history either.

A small request: Could either TFJ or one of the list administrators please put some line breaks in TFJ's post #4071? That long line messes up the formatting of this whole thread in my browser.

It was probably a college bowl game. And remember, football pools can pay off at the end of each quarter of play, just like this LCCF pool. Can you please check each quarter's score for college games starting in 1970? You'll need to check all permutations too, e.g. 15-5, 5-15, 15-15, etc.

I did some more Googling, but everything I found just showed the final scores, and none of them matched. I'm inclined to give up, unless tracking down the game will help me find a cache.

Hmm, it was a long time ago. Maybe we had a 5 and a 3. Begin the new search. evil

Sorry if I was overdoing it there. I just thought HGS had taken care of it. Maybe it does need it's own thread....maybe.

There is still room for 10 more members to join the pool, and five four of you (that have already entered) still have two additional squares to choose. laugh

The spirit of the first post in this thread has spoken to me, and revealed the names of the 5: Bruhn, Humboldt Flier, Jasper, Watlove, toodle2407.

Can the Thomson Clan play even if they aren't on the Forum? I figured it didn't hurt to ask. They could help fill in the grid and, it's not gambling, you know, 'cause it's free, right?

I assume you mean four squares total for The Thomsons (not 4 x 7=28). Let's vote:
Thomsons
Only one choice allowed

The Thomsons are my children, Sabotage, Eragon, Flower, Hello Kitty and Lil Bo Peep. They would only take 4 squares if you vote yes. Either way, I just thought i'd ask since I wasn't sure how the squares were going to be filled in.

I just went over the rules and it says "only LCCF registered members" can play. I understand that so, if you all vote no I completely understand. Thanks for putting up the poll in any case!

Well, the drawing of the numbers won't take place at Shamus T. Bones, unless we want to stand out in the parking lot in the rain. Thanks Petty Cachers for the heads up on the restaurant hours.

When a new location is chosen I'll post it on the calendar for February 5.

By the way, this thread will be temporarily locked on Friday when I leave for the number drawing. Any new entries need to be posted on this thread before Friday morning. Once the pool grid is updated the thread will reopen. Good luck, everyone!

Thanks.

All the Super Bowl Ads can be viewed following the game.

And here is how the Letterman/Oprah/Leno commercial came together.
